Shelby County home condemned because of sink hole

Shelby County (KTBS) - A family in Shelby County was evacuated from their home after a sinkhole was discovered under their house.

Shelby County Sheriff's Department responded to a call on Sunday, April 14, concerning a sink hole off of FM 2261. The Sheriff's Department along with Shelbyville volunteer firefighters were called to the scene.

Firefighters evaluated the sink hole, which was visible along the edge of the house and porch. The homeowners, Earl and Linda Wright's daughter, Jackie, removed boards from the porch to give a better view of the hole. Authorities used a depth stick to determine the width and depth of the hole. The stick pushed 40 feet in under the edge of a brick wall under the house which was once part of a water well that had been filled in and covered just years before the house was built. The stick never hit solid ground.

The sink hole appears to be under a large part of the house and the homeowners were advised to evacuate their home.
