Small plane makes emergency landing on New York City highway

NEW YORK -- A small plane made an emergency landing Saturday afternoon on a New York City highway, CBS New York reports.

The plane landed on the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx, the New York Fire Department posted to its Twitter feed. The accident happened sometime after 3 p.m.

The FDNY Emergency Medical Services division told CBS New York three people left the plane without major injuries.

There was a large fuel spill as a result of the crash, CBS New York station WCBS-AM reports. Traffic in the area was severely backed up.

Authorities told CBS New York station WINS-AM the plane was headed to LaGuardia Airport.

There was no official word on why the plane had to land.
