Smith Co leaders taking public input on 2014 budget

(KYTX) - Smith County leaders are taking public input on the 2014 budget, which goes into effect this October.

They held another comment session this morning.

The new budget keeps the tax rate the same, but higher property values will give the county more money to work with.

Grass-Roots America spoke against the budget, saying the county needs more long-term planning when it comes to finances and roads.

"Everyone here knows it's critical for the future of Smith County to continue maintaining and rebuilding and having the right kind of transportation plan in place."

"Let's get a county engineer on board. I believe that's included in the budget this time. And then let's give that engineer the tools they need to put together a long term plan for our county."

Tonight's hearing focuses on budgeting for the sheriff's department and the new jail.
