Smith County Jail captain under investigation, placed on leave

SMITH COUNTY (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - A high-ranking Smith County Sheriff's Office employee is under an internal investigation and was placed on leave Monday.

Sheriff Larry Smith confirmed information the Tyler Morning Telegraph received about the investigation.

However, Smith said the investigation is not criminal in nature and is based on whether the employee, a Smith County Jail captain, violated department policies and procedures.

Smith would not elaborate on the incident which sparked the investigation.

"(The captain) is on paid leave at this time and until the investigation is completed. I stay out of it and let the chief deputies handle it, because I am part of the appeals process should the need arise," he said in regards to the case.

Smith said if the investigation shows the captain, a long-time Smith County Sheriff's Office employee, did violate internal policies and procedures it could result in a minor disciplinary action up to separation from the department.
