Smith County one of stormiest in Texas

SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - An East Texas county is named one of the stormiest counties in the whole state.  Smith County is actually ranked in the top 25 for two categories.

A recent study based on insurance claims, just released by Allstate shows that Smith County is number one in the state for lightning strikes and number 12 for hail and wind.

Tyler Allstate agent Chip Crist isn't too shocked about the ranking, considering how many claims he files for the county.
" It's just our east texas climate, with the gulf and the north blowing in together right here in East Texas we see a lot more storms," Crist says.

The strange thing is Smith County is the only East Texas county on either list.  Crist says that has a lot to do with smith county's large population.

"I hear it from everybody," he says. "Whitehouse and Bullard see a lot of hail, and of course the Smith County line right by I-20 sees a lot of hail."
Our local ONCOR representative Charles Hill didn't seem so blown away either.
"Typically we see a lot more outages due to weather right here in Tyler than we do in a lot of other parts of East Texas. Our number one cause of outages are trees and wind related and second is lightning," Hill says.
So what do these rankings mean for you? well, unfortunately, if you live in smith county, it could mean higher insurance rates.

"Your rates go by your zip code," Crist says.
