SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - Smith County is officially one of the top 20 stormiest counties in the state! A new Allstate Insurance report ranks Smith County at number 12 for storm damage.
The survey based the rankings on counties impacted most by damage from wind and hail. It only ranked the top 20, and no other East Texas county is on the list.
People who live in Smith County say they're seeing more and more storm damage every year.
Richard "Dutch" Hagedorn thought he'd escaped stormy weather when he left the East Coast for East Texas years ago.
"To see hail cover everything, I don't recall seeing that in New Jersey!" he said.
He's called Smith County home for six years, and rainy days like Tuesday, don't shock him anymore. He spent this past year replacing his entire roof because of a bad hail storm.
"it was April 4th last year," Hagedorn said.
Tyler Allstate Agent Chip Christ says each year, storm damage in Smith County gets even worse.
"Therefore everybody's insurance every year is getting a little higher. We all see that and feel that. My personal insurance went up $400 on my house," Christ said.
The best way to save money, and the hassle of making claims? Prepare before the storm hits.
"Especially in the spring, we know we're going to get wind and hail," Christ said.
88 percent of people surveyed said they thought they were prepared for a storm before it hit. However, 60 percent of those people had not cleaned out the space in their garage. If you leave room in your garage, if a storm hits you'll have space to pull your car inside and it won't get damaged.
Christ said you can also check for dead limbs and trees around your house.
"Make sure you have those limbs trimmed off to keep them from falling on your house."
Also, drag all outdoor furniture inside so it is not damaged.
Hagedorn says he'll be ready the next time a big storm rolls around.
"If they said it was going to be a hail storm like we had last year, I'd get prepared for it," he said.
When making a claim, it's really helpful to have an inventory of the items in your house. Insurance agents say that can be as easy as taking a video camera or still camera around your house and documenting what you have, and how much everything cost. Allstate even has an app called the Digital Locker, that helps you record that information.
Allstate says 52 percent of Texans are not sure about what their insurance covers. if you're unsure, call your insurer to review your policy to make sure you're covered for what you need.
