(TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) -  A learning-based child care facility is relocating from Lindale to Tyler.

On Wednesday, the Tyler City Council approved a zone change from "Light Industrial District" to "Light Commercial District," paving the way for the move.

Great Foundations will be located at 307 N. Glenwood Blvd. It will be housed in a 19,000-square-foot building, which has been vacant and at one time was owned by the late businessman and civic leader Walden P. "Red" Little, according to developer Ed Thompson.

Great Foundations founder and executive director Heather Wilson said they wanted to move the facility to Tyler because "we felt like this is where we needed to be."

"We wanted to reach out to as many families and children as we could. We felt like we could do more of that here," she said.

Ms. Wilson said the child care facility caters to children from 6 weeks old to 12 years old and specializes in those who struggle with academic, speech and behavioral delays.

"We work with a lot of children who have maybe not been successful in other facilities," she added.

She said instructors "teach the way the children learn," which could include pet therapy and "different movements that help integrate the brain."

Additionally, she said, Great Foundations offers before-school and after-school programs, as well as sensory-based learning.

Great Foundations will open in Tyler next month. It will bring between 25 and 30 jobs and will be able to hold about 200 to 250 children, Ms. Wilson said.

Once it is open in Tyler, its impact on the community will be large, she said, because they want to give children an opportunity to be successful when they start school and for them to be functional in the classroom.

"Our program is designed to really help the children who are struggling now so when they get to kindergarten they are successful and don't disrupt the learning environment," she said.

Thompson said, "It's just a great honor to take this facility … and restore it into something I think he (Little) would be really proud of."
