Spring Hill adds former university head coach, John Tyler grad to football staff

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - A Longview area football program added two new pieces to its coaching staff this month.

Spring Hill High School Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Mark Sartain says he's filled two football coaching positions, including defensive coordinator, after suffering two resignations from his staff two days before a state deadline.

Derek Schlieve was head coach and defensive coordinator at Mayville State University in North Dakota the past three seasons, where his teams were 17-16. Sartain says Schlieve was looking for a new coaching job and contacted Spring Hill ISD this spring. When Sartain's son, a member of Spring Hill's coaching staff, visited his in-laws in Minnesota last month, Schlieve drove to Minnesota and met with him.

Sartain says he's also hired John Tyler High School graduate Quinton Jones to fill the other vacancy on his football staff. For the past two seasons, Jones was an assistant coach on John Tyler's football defensive staff. Both new coaches are very familiar with Spring Hill's defensive scheme, so Sartain says he's pleased his young Panthers will have continuity in the program.

Spring Hill competes in the University Interscholastic League's Class 4A, Division !!, and shares a competitive football district with Gladewater, Tatum, Center, Atlanta and Texarkana Pleasant Grove.

According to July 18 statement released by Mayville State University:

"Mayville State University Athletics announces the resignation of head football coach Derek Schlieve. Coach Schlieve leaves Mayville State for Spring Hill High School in Longview, TX. Derek was head coach of the Comets for three seasons, leading them to an overall record 17-16 during his tenure. This past year the Comets enjoyed their best season in 23 years finishing 7-4 highlighted by a win over Valley City State.

"Mayville State athletic director Mike Moore commented, "We are disappointed to see Derek go, but he has definitely left the wood pile higher. We thank him for his work while he was here and wish him well in his new endeavor. Derek and his staff have established momentum and a good foundation from which the next coach can build".

"A search for Derek's replacement has already begun. An announcement regarding his replacement will be made shortly."
