LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Cherokee Brewer has two children -- including a fourth grader in Spring Hill schools. He thinks it's the best school district in Gregg County -- but he also thinks there's room for improvement.
"I don't think there's enough teachers in the classroom for all of the children that they have," Brewer said.
Five candidates are running for three at-large seats on Spring Hill's board of trustees. Board president Claudine Giffin is challenged by Kay Stone Doss for place 1, and Dr. Will Hollas is challenging Traci Wallis for place 2 on the board. Jason holt is running unopposed for place 3.
So Tuesday night, Spring Hill PTA is bringing the candidates to the parents in a Meet the Candidate forum here at the Junior High School. The forum begins at 6 p.m.
Brewer says he'd like to see smaller class sizes. But he's most concerned with CSCOPE -- a curriculum support system used by Spring Hill ISD and most school districts in Texas.
Brewer says c-scope handcuffs teachers from teaching important facts about American history and other subjects. "Allow the teacher to be more proactive in what they want to do in their classroom," he said.
We spoke with two other Spring Hill parents who would not go on camera. They echoed Brewer's words -- saying that CSCOPE is the top issue as they prepare for the May 11 election. Brewer says he supports anyone who wants to support teachers.
"I think teachers should probably get better pay... and probably more help in the classroom," Brewer said.
