(KYTX/CBS) - Parts of West Virginia are under a state of emergency following a chemical spill.
Chemical company Freedom Industries says an agent it uses to clean coal leaked from one of its tanks and into the Elk River. That's in the central and southwestern parts of the state. The chemical smells like licorice and can cause breathing problems, eye and digestive irritation.
Nearly 200,000 people are being told not to use their water. Resturants have even closed their doors. Thousands of children are also out of school. Health officials say so far, they have not gotten any reports of anyone getting sick. No word on when the the pipes would be cleared and the water safe to drink again.
