Street altercation leads to Longview teen's arrest on weapons charges

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - At about 7:30 Wednesday night, Longview police officers say they were patrolling on Twelfth Street when they found a large group of people standing in the street at Aurel Boulevard.

According to a police report, the group appeared ready to fight when officers heard a gunshot coming from the crowd, then saw someone in a red long-sleeved shirt running west from the scene holding a handgun. After a foot pursuit, the suspect - identified as 17-year-old Charles Hordarious McNary - was detained in an empty lot in the 800 block of Aurel Boulevard.

McNary told officers he shot the gun because people were about to fight his brother, and that he threw the handgun in some bushes, according to the report. Officers located the Smith and Wesson 40-caliber handgun after a search, and they found that the gun's serial number had been intentionally scratched off.

McNary is charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon, disorderly conduct/discharging and displaying a firearm, and tampering with identification number. He's in the Gregg County Jail tonight on $15,000 bond.
