Surgeons save life of baby born with heart outside body

HOUSTON (CNN) - It's going to be a Happy Thanksgiving for one Houston family.

A baby born with her heart partially outside the body is on the road to recovery. Little Audrina was born with a third of her heart beating outside her body. It took surgeons 6 hours to reconstruct the baby's chest, to make space for the heart inside. Now 5 weeks old, Audrina is doing well.

"They have no idea how thankful I am. If it wasn't for them as well as the grace of God she wouldn't be here, says Audrina's mother Ashley Cardenas.

Audrina still has a hole in her heart, but doctors say it may heal on its own.
