Suspect arrested after attempted robbery of USPS facility in Smith County

SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) – A man tried to evade authorities Sunday night after he was spotted burglarizing a business in Smith County.

The Smith County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a possible burglary in progress at the United States Postal Service Center located in the 12600 block of Farm-to-Market Road 3311 in Smith County.

They arrived to find a hole had been cut in the perimeter fence and saw someone inside the building. The person fled on foot into the nearby woods after seeing the deputies, but with the help of K9 officer Endy, he was quickly located and arrested.

The suspect is identified as 24-year-old Jess Dean Spencer of Kilgore. He was transported to the Smith County Jail charged with Burglary of a Building and Evading arrest. Bond has not yet been set.

Deputies found a vehicle belonging to the Spencer, containing what they classified as burglar tools. It was impounded and taken to a Sheriff’s Office facility for processing.

Numerous tools were also located in the USPS facility, believed to be used by Spencer to remove copper wiring from the building.

This is an ongoing investigation. If anyone has any information related to this or any other crimes, please contact the Smith County Sheriff’s Office at (903) 566-6600.
