Suspect killed, officer injured in overnight shooting in East Texas

BOWIE CO. (KTBS) - One man was killed and a police officer injured following a domestic disturbance call in DeKalb, Texas. It happened just before one o'clock this morning in the 200 block of Pecan Street.

Police say a female DeKalb officer and a Bowie County deputy were both responding to a domestic disturbance when the shooting happened. When they arrived, authorities say the homeowner shot the DeKalb officer in the leg.

DeKalb Police Chief Shawn Walraven says the officers returned fire and the homeowner was fatally shot. Authorities did not say how many shots were fired or where the man was hit.

The DeKalb officer was later transported to a Texarkana hospital. "My officer is fine. She is recovering now at her home," said Chief Walraven. No names have been released at this time.

The DeKalb officer has been with their department only a couple of years, but Chief Walraven says she came here with 20 years of law enforcement experience. The Texas Rangers have been called in to investigate.
