SWAT officers subdue Kilgore man accused of pistol-whipping sister

KILGORE/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Authorities say it took multiple agencies including the Longview/Gregg County SWAT Team to take a Kilgore man into custody early Monday after he allegedly pistol-whipped his sister.

James Smith, 44, remains in the Gregg County Jail today on $20,000 bond, charged with aggravated assault/family violence.

At about 5 a.m. Monday, Gregg County sheriff's patrol deputies responded to a house in the 1100 block of Texas 31 East in Kilgore. According to an arrest affidavit, Smith had barricaded himself inside the residence after assaulting his sister with a pistol. SWAT officers came to the location, went into the house and located Smith in a back room, where he was placed under arrest, reports showed.

According to the affidavit, Smith was upset that his sister invited her boyfriend to the house after the boyfriend had been asked to leave for assaulting Smith's sister in the past. When Smith found the man on his property, he retrieved his Taurus 9 mm pistol, went outside and fired 12 rounds at his sister's boyfriend, who left the residence on a four-wheeler. Smith then approached his sister and "struck her several times in the head, arms and upper body with the pistol," reports showed.
