Tatum celebration of Texas' official pie promotes mammograms

TATUM/RUSK COUNTY (KYTX) - Tatum held its second-annual Pecan Pie Festival Saturday at the City Park.

Organizers say more than 2,000 people showed up for food and attractions.

The festival began last year as a way to bring good shepherd medical center's mobile mammography unit to Tatum for a day. Hope Dale lost a friend to breast cancer several years ago -- so she said she got herself a check-up Saturday.

"I miss her dearly," Dale said of her late friend, Jennifer Pepper, of Tatum, "and I know she would be proud of me and all of the other ladies who are having this done."

"I've known so many women that have had breast cancer, and their breast cancer was detected by a mammogram," said festival founder and organizer, Crystal Jenkins.

Organizers say they hope to make next year's festival even bigger. Just three weeks ago, the Texas House of Representatives passed a resolution making the pecan pie the state's official pie.
