Technology in the Classroom

TYLER (KYTX) - Pencil and paper is a thing of the past for some East Texas schools. In this day and age, it's all about technology in the classroom.

Thirty years ago, it was a blackboard at the front of every classroom.

In the year 2013, it's Apple TV, an iPad in every teacher's hand and surround sound in each classroom.

"When I was in school, all the information I needed to know in third grade came from the teacher. If I had a question, I asked the teacher and she knew everything," said Galen Manning with iSchoolCampus.

Galen Manning says this technology driven generation of students have questions for teachers who don't always have the answers.

"I'm a firm believer that education happens best when it happens intrinsically, when a student decides to learn and let's their curiosity guide them," said Manning.

Manning is equipping Cumberland Academy in Tyler with the latest technology. This way, teachers can have all of the answers.

Apple TV allows a student to display their work, from their laptop or tablet, on this television screen.

Teachers can interact with all of his or her students, at the same time or individually, through the technology.

"I am coming from a district where I had a limited amount of technology, into a classroom where I have technology at my fingertips," said Raquel Hamons.

Each student in fifth grade teacher Raquel Hamons' classroom will have a laptop on their first day of school.

Mrs. Hamons says the technology helps her students learn quickly, while cutting down on discipline problems in the classroom.

"Because students are engaged 100 percent of the time," said Mrs.Hamons.

A relationship with technology that students will use in and out of the classroom.
