Texans petition Greg Abbott for marriage equality

AUSTIN (KHOU) -- Same-sex couples and supporters of same-sex marriage in Texas are petitioning the Texas attorney general for marriage equality.

Same-sex marriage supporters intended to deliver more than 5,000 petitions to Attorney General Greg Abbott, urging that Texas lawmakers drop the ban on same-sex marriage in Texas.

However, the attorney general's office told petitioners it could not accept petitions submitted in person, so several members of the group walked to a post office to mail them instead.

In February, a federal judge declared Texas' ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional.

Judge Orlando Garcia issued the preliminary injunction after two gay couples challenged a state constitutional amendment and a longstanding law.

Abbott and Texas Gov. Rick Perry still defend the state's law. Abbott said in February he would appeal the federal court ruling.
