Thunder Soul viewing, alumni band performance moved to Longview HS

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - A late change for this weekend's Thunder Soul orchestra performance in Longview has been announced.

Organizer Victoria Wilson said the performance will now be held at the Mickey Melton Performance Center at Longview High School, 201 E. Tomlinson Parkway, on Saturday night.

The performance by alumni of a 1970s band from an inner-city Houston high school was originally scheduled for the Belcher Center at LeTourneau University.

"We feel this change provides an opportunity for more area families and students to see this amazing performance and award-winning documentary by Executive Producer Jamie Foxx," Wilson said in a media release Wednesday.

The night will begin with the viewing of Thunder Soul, a documentary about a funk band from the 1970s made up of lower income students from the Fifth Ward of Houston, who became world renown under the leadership of their band director and Marshall-native Conrad Johnson.  The documentary will be followed by a concert by the alumni of Kashmere High School's Stage Band - the stars of the documentary.

The performance begins at 7 p.m. Saturday. It is part of a month of activities planned in Longview in celebration of National Diversity Awareness Month.

Tickets will be available at door for $20, $10 or $5 for students. Cash, checks or credit/debit cards will be accepted. For more information, call (903) 235-9087.
