Tips from public leads to arrest of Nacogdoches County burglary suspect

From the Nacogdoches Co. Sheriff's Office:

NACOGDOCHES (KYTX) - The Nacogdoches county sheriff's office has arrested a Lufkin man for three counts of burglary of a habitation.

Sheriff Jason Bridges stated that the Sheriff's office posted pictures of a vehicle and a suspect taken from a game camera that was sent out to the media and social media sites.

About two hours later, the sheriff office started receiving tips on the suspect from the public. All the tips lead to one man that was arrested Tuesday morning at his residence after he was found hiding in an air return vent.

Sheriff Jason Bridges stated that investigators received enough information to positively identify Paul Smith. Investigators obtained a warrant for his arrest Tuesday morning for Burglary of a habitation a 2nd felony. Sheriff investigators meet with Angelina County Sheriff Deputies who already had the area blocked off. Sheriff Jason Bridges stated that Smith is known to run from officers.

Upon arrival at the residence officers met with Smith girlfriend who denied that he was there but gave Deputies consent to search. A short time later Smith was found hiding inside the residence inside of an air return vent. He was taken into custody without incident.

Investigators found stolen property at Paul Smith residence that the Nacogdoches County Sheriff Office in investigating. Smith was transported to the Nacogdoches County Jail. Since that time, Sheriff Investigators obtained two more warrants on Smith for Burglary.

Paul Smith 51 years of age has been charged with three counts of burglary of a habitation a 2nd felony. Two burglaries occurred in the Lilbert area in November and the other occurred between Kingtown and Etoile on Fm 226 in February 2014.  

Sheriff Jason Bridges stated that two females were also taken into custody at Smith's residence by the Angelina County Sheriff Office for harboring a fugitive.  We would like to thank the public and the Angelina County Sheriff Office for their help in this investigation. The timely information we received from the public and from the Angelina County Sheriff Office helped us identify this suspect that has led to the clearance of three active burglary investigations in Nacogdoches County.
