"Tipsy Tow" information and phone numbers

AAA Texas will be offering a car towing service so drivers will not have to drive after drinking during the Fourth of July holiday.

The program, called ‘Tipsy Tow,' will provide Texans a safe ride home for up to 10 miles. The service will be available for 30 hours, from 6 p.m. today through midnight on Thursday, according to a AAA Texas news release.

"Far too often, we hear about people being killed or permanently injured as a result of drunk or buzzed driving and it is entirely preventable," Linda von Quintus, AAA Vice President of Government & Community Affairs, said in the release. "If you plan to drink, make plans not to drive. As a last resort, AAA Texas is pleased to offer Tipsy Tow to make sure intoxicated people don't get behind the wheel and don't hurt themselves or others — but get home safely instead."

Drivers, bartenders, restaurant managers, party hosts or passengers of a drinking driver can call 1-800-222-4357 or 1-800-AAA-HELP for a free tow home, the release sates. Callers must tell AAA Texas operators, "I need a Tipsy Tow," to receive the free tow and ride home.

A regular AAA Texas-contracted roadside service truck will be dispatched, but drivers can expect to pay the rate charged by the tow truck contractor for rides farther than 10 miles. The passenger and tow truck driver should agree in advance what the excess mileage charges will be and the method of payment, prior to providing the tow.

The service excludes rides for passengers, and is restricted to a one-way, one-time ride for the driver. The destination is limited to the driver's home. Reservations will not be accepted.
