TJC football player arrested

TYLER (KYTX) - A TJC football player and another student are arrested after a routine traffic stop Sunday night.

It happened between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Blackwell Street, near the TJC campus.

When Tyler Police pulled over Freddie Lee Allen, Jr. and Khalid Conner for a traffic violation, they say they smelled marijuana coming from the car.

During a search officers found marijuana along with a pistol.

Allen, who police say was the TJC football player, was charged with possession of marijuana and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

He was also charged with tampering with I.D. numbers because the gun had the serial numbers scratched off.

Conner, a passenger in the car was arrested on a charge of possession of marijuana.

There was a third student in the car, but he was not charged with any violation.

The TJC Athletic Director tells CBS 19 Allen is on the varsity football scout team, and practices with players before games. He does not play in the games.

Conner is a red shirt player for the Apaches. Both students have been suspended pending the outcome of the charges. TJC Athletic Department staff members say the students are at risk of being dropped from the program. TJC has a no tolerance policy.
