(CNN/KYTX) - Today is the first day of Kwanzaa.
The week-long, non-religious holiday was first observed in 1966. It celebrates African-American cultures and traditions. For seven days, Kwanzaa calls on all of us to focus on seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.
In East Texas, the African-American cultural events committee is sponsoring Kwanzaa at the Tyler Public Library. It will be at the Taylor Auditorium December 26 - January 1. It's from 7-9pm.
