Today marks the 27th anniversary of Challenger explosion

(CNN) - Today marks the 27th anniversary of the space shuttle Challenger disaster.

The fateful launch took place on January 28th, 1986. The shuttle exploded 73 seconds into flight, killing seven people, including Christa McAuliffe -- who would have been the first teacher in space.

The explosion was caused by a rocket booster failure that ignited the fuel tank.
