Toddler found walking around after fatal crash near Conroe

MONTGOMERY COUNTY (KHOU) -- One man was dead and a woman was listed in critical condition following an accident near Conroe early Monday, officials said.

A child between three and four years old was thrown from the crash and found wandering around, deputies said.

It happened just before 2 a.m. on Old Houston Road near Stevenson Drive, southeast of the City of Conroe.

Firefighters with the Caney Creek Fire Department arrived to find a vehicle upside down in a ditch. A female passenger was thrown from the car and was unconscious nearby. She was sent to the hospital in critical condition. Officials said a man was trapped in the car and later died at the scene.

The small boy, who somehow escaped serious injury, was taken care of by a nearby resident until rescue crews were able to assess him. He was sent to the hospital with scrapes and bruises.

State troopers were investigating the crash. They said only one car was involved. Evidence at the scene suggested the vehicle was traveling southbound on Old Houston Road when the driver hit the brakes. A lengthy skid mark was left on the pavement before the vehicle left the roadway.

Making the crash worse, the vehicle hit a culvert pipe at a high rate of speed and flipped, disintegrating the sedan.
