Traffic lanes back open following fatal accident near Lufkin

UPDATE: Hazmat crews spent Monday night and Tuesday morning cleaning up a chemical spill following a fatal accident on US 59 north of Lufkin near FM 853.

DPS says traffic is back to normal and both lanes of traffic are open.

The driver of an 18-wheeler involved in Monday's three-vehicle accident involving a Lufkin ISD school bus has been identified as 57-year-old Barry Harper of Pine Bluff Arkansas.

He was pronounced dead at the scene after losing control of his rig and veered off the road striking a school bus attempting to pull out of a parking lot.

The truck flipped hitting a trailer.

There were several children on the bus but they were not injured according to a DPS report.

Initial reports indicated the truck was carrying a flammable substance called Placard 1866.

The accident  remains under investigation.




(KYTX) - Hazmat crews and Emergency responders are on the scene of a wreck located at HWY 59 and FM 843.

Angelina Co DPS says the wreck has traffic backed up along U.S. Highway 59 just North of Lufkin.

There was one fatality and several injuries in the crash. The children that were on the school bus were removed and there have been no reports of major injuries. 

The wreck involves a Lufkin ISD school bus, a chip hauler and a hhazardous cargo vehicle.

DPS says one of the vehicles is carrying a flammable substance called Placard 1866. Traffic is being re-rerouted while hazmat crews investigate.
