TxDOT battling Winter weather

TYLER (KYTX) - TxDOT crews in East Texas are also battling this Winter weather. They say this year, we've had a lot of rain and freezing weather. But, it's the drier, warmer weather that allows TxDOT to push through projects quickly.

"We've been spoiled the last couple years by having dry, even warm winters where we've been able to work through them. And, that may not be the case this year." says TxDOT spokesman Larry Krantz.

He admits- this weather has put a strain on workers.

"You're limited as to what you can really do on some of these projects. And, once it starts raining and you see icy conditions, you just have to wait for warmer weather."

But, TxDOT is still hard at work.

"Our maintenance crews are having to battle ice and snow. You know, they work 12 hour shifts when this is going on. And, once that's over, it's right back onto the roadway to try to repair some of the damage."

Krantz says the project that's most concerning to him is the utility work on West Loop 323 just South of Front Street in Tyler.

"That railroad overpass project- that's digging in the dirt, that's a lot of stuff- turning the mud. That's limiting the amount of work that can be done on that right now. And, the utilities have to be moved before the project can really get underway. Right now, it's a weather issue. More than anything else, it's keeping crews unable to be finished."

John Rodgers has been watching the construction across the street where he works.

"I'm anxious to see what it's all going to be like, you know, maybe improve business around here."
He says crews are still doing what they can despite the weather.

"It slows you down when it's cold and wet, but they're still out there working." says Rodgers.

"That's the nature of working on roadways." says Krantz. "Mother Nature gets her way when she wants it and she's been very demanding this Winter."
