Tyler City Council cancels May election; four posts were uncontested

TYLER (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - Tyler City Council voted this morning to cancel the upcoming May elections for the four available city council seats because all are uncontested.

Sam Mezayek, of District 1, and Mark Whatley, of District 5 East, are incumbents who had each filed the required paper work to run for reelection and do not have any challengers for their respective seats.

John Nix, 33, a Lubbock native who has lived in Tyler since 2001, had filed his paperwork for the District 6 seat vacated by Jason Wright. And Edward "Don" Moore, 65, had filed in January for the District 3 seat, being vacated by Ralph Caraway because of term limits. None of the four council members has a challenger.

Moore and Nix were present. Both had filed for two seats. State law allows for cancellation because they are uncontested, city attorney Gary Landers said. "We will save the tax payers money," said Mayor Barbara Bass.
