TYLER (KYTX) -- There's not a lot of visibility around a certain corner in the Woods Subdivision in Tyler.
Russell Williams says it was there that he crashed into an SUV head-on that was in his lane.
"Honestly I was thinking, I can't believe this is about to happen," Williams said.
The 19-year-old driver said he cut the corner a little close to avoid cars parked on the street. It cost Williams.
"I got slammed into the wind shield, and my head hit the wind shield," Williams said.
He suffered a concussion, bruised ribs, and a black eye among other injuries. He says what saved his life is wearing a helmet.
"I don't care how far you're going, you need to wear one even if you're not a competitive rider. This happened in a neighborhood," Williams said.
Bike shop owners say they encourage the use of helmets with any purchase. "They're cheap insurance. A doctor told me one time a closed head injury can be like being in 3rd grade the rest of your life," Tyler Simpson, owner of Simpson's Fitness and Adventure Sports, said.
Williams is now going to rehab three times a week, and making huge strides from when he could barely walk a month ago.
