TYLER (KYTX) – Friday, Tyler ISD administrators, teachers and staff enjoyed a morning of inspiration and celebration at a district-wide Convocation event held at Green Acres Baptist Church.
The event focused on the "I AM Tyler ISD" theme that celebrates the many success stories of alumni. Superintendent Mr. Gary Mooring also thanked the more than 2,600 employees for their immense dedication in helping Tyler ISD students succeed.
Reverend Orenthia Mason, Tyler ISD school board president, got the energy going throughout the crowd by performing a unique and fun rap. Following a procession honoring the 2013 Campus Teachers of the Year, the event highlighted 27 alumni that continue to make a difference in the Tyler community.
2012 John Tyler High School Valedictorian and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) participant, Eduardo Serratos, delivered the morning's special message. Eduardo moved to the district when he was 10 years old and overcame many cultural and economic challenges. Because of his hard work in the AVID program, he received more than $40,000 in scholarships. Now a sophomore at the University of Texas majoring in Business Communications with a minor in Spanish, Eduardo embodies the level of success district educators desire for all Tyler ISD students.
The first day of classes is Monday, August 26.
