TYLER (KYTX) - Kaleb Hawkins is just in the eighth grade. But, he's already planning his future after high school.
Kaleb came to the Harvey Convention Center in Tyler with his mother, to take part in a unique event titled "Your Future is Now."
Kaleb lives by that motto.
"I like building stuff, I like making things and seeing them doing cool stuff," said Kaleb Hawkins.
That's why Kaleb checked out the table on architecture and construction.
This event gives Tyler ISD students a chance to check out various career paths, from criminal justice to business to the culinary arts.
"We want them to start thinking about their future in middle school," said Misti Rasure.
Misti Rasure is the Director of the new Career and Technical Education Center.
Tyler ISD broke ground on the center this month. It will open in fall of 2015. It's a product of the recent bond election.
Tyler school leaders say it will prepare students for high skill, high wage, and high demand careers.
"Sometimes middle school students think one direction and don't realize that there are a huge variety of choices they have," added Rasure.
Choices that can lead to promising jobs, that provide a stable future for the next generation.
The event also introduced parents and student to advanced studies and fine arts program.
Representatives from Texas College, Tyler Junior College, and the University of Texas at Tyler were available to help answer questions about the college enrollment process.
