Tyler mayor hosts day of prayer and fasting

TYLER (KYTX) -  As people of all faiths gather in the Rose Garden Center in Tyler to sing that old gospel hymn "Amazing Grace," you would probably be surprised to know that it's Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass providing the music behind the words.

"It shows me  her care and concern for her city, it stems first with her creator," said Jason Abney.

Mayor Bass, along with ministers, community leaders and even police officers took this hour to pray together and go without lunch.

Prayers across the room reached people of all religions and backgrounds, as they offered words of encouragement for our city and county leaders, first responders, members of the military and those affected by the tragedy in Boston.

"Father, we recognize what happened in Boston that we live in a broken world," one person prayed.

A broken world that Mayor Bass believes can only be fixed with prayer and concern.

"It doesn't mean everyday is going to go great, it just means God is with us no regardless of what happens," explained Mayor Bass.

People united in prayer led by a leader with a strong faith.
