(KYTX) -- There are a lot of unanswered questions surrounding the death of Alonzo Gonzalez, just 7 months old.
"We are treating it as suspicious until we know the cause of death and that's what we are waiting on," Officer Don Martin, with the Tyler Police Department, said.
Officers and emergency crews arrived at the home on 1218 N. Ross street Saturday evening to a call that an infant wasn't breathing.
"The mother stated that she had placed the 7-month-old baby on the bed along with her 2- year-old boy, and she stepped out of the room and heard a thump and came back in the room and the infant was on the floor," Martin said.
We weren't told how long that mom was gone, but officers say the baby was taken to a local hospital, then transferred to a Dallas hospital. Gonzalez was taken off life support yesterday afternoon.
"This is certainly not a common thing that happens. That's why we want to make sure we do a thorough investigation," Martin said.
CBS19 tried to speak with the parents today, but no one was at home. Child safety experts say it's important to always place babies in a crib, even if you are away only a moment.
"When babies roll, they can roll right off a bed if you don't have a safety-approved crib," Jim Cleveland, Community Initiative Specialist for Child Protective Services, said.
And this case not only involves the loss of a baby's life.
"The tragedy is also the family and the parents that have to live with that tragedy," Cleveland said.
Reps with Child Protective Services encourage caregivers to remember the ABC's: The baby should A. sleep alone, B. sleep on their back, and C. be in a crib.
