Tyler state rep calls on education commissioner to reconsider Azleway charter revocation

(TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - State Rep. Matt Schaefer, R-Tyler, has called on Michael Williams, Texas' commissioner of education, to hold off on the revocation of Azleway Charter School's charter due to pending litigation.

Azleway has an appeal pending wit the Third Court of Appeals in Austin. Schaefer feels the revocation's timing would be harmful to all stakeholders in the school, including Chapel Hill ISD, which would absorb many of the school's students.

"A tremendous amount of harm could be done by moving responsibility for these students on such short notice after school has already started," he said in a release. "If the revocation does take place, there should be a formal transition plan which gives everyone involved adequate time to prepare."

Schaefer believes Azleway should not be evaluated under the same standards as other charter schools because it only serves at-risk students. He said Williams has the discretion and should step in to do what is best for Azleway students.
