Tyler, TX (KYTX) -- Every winter Patricia Hawkins and her family faced the bitter cold without heat under their roof.
"We made it. With the help of the good Lord, we made it through," Hawkins said.
She says her and her two grandchildren did their best to stay warm. "We covered up, just got in the bed and covered up," Hawkins said.
That's no longer the case as East Texas Refrigeration installed a new heating/AC unit in her home for free, just in time for Christmas.
"I was crying because I was so happy," Hawkins said.
Todd Green, owner of East Texas Refrigeration, says Habitat for Humanity helped him find a family who could use the heater. "Someone who had gone without a heater for a long time and couldn't afford to do it," Green said.
He's also teamed up with the Salvation Army for the Give the Gift of Warmth Program, gathering more than 200 blankets for needy families. He hopes it will be an annual event.
