(CBS) - Typhoon Haiyan has made landfall in Vietnam as a Category One storm.
Haiyan is being called one of the most powerful storms to ever hit the Philippines. Thousands are feared dead in the Philippine Islands, but an accurate death toll is difficult because communication systems remain down in many areas.
Jim Edds is a photographer from Florida who was in one of the hard hit areas.
"It was just complete chaos. A mass of people trying to get out of there because there's no food and no water."
President Obama issued a statement saying he was deeply saddened by the loss of life and the destruction. The Pentagon is sending U.S. Marines to assist in the recovery. Many Filipino-Americans say they are watching the news and waiting for word from family members who haven't been heard from since before the storm hit.
