LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - The latest unemployment figures from the U.S. Department of Labor revealed positive economic news for East Texas.
The unemployment rate in Longview for March was 5.5 percent, and 6.4 percent in Tyler, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' latest numbers released today. Both cities enjoyed a decrease in unemployment of two-tenths of a percent from the previous month - it was 5.7 percent in February in Longview, and 6.6 percent in February in Tyler.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in the past 12 months, Longview has seen most employment growth in information service jobs, which increased 7.7 percent to about 1,400 such jobs. The number of manufacturing in Longview dropped 4.2 percent in the past year to about 11,400 jobs.
Tyler saw a 3.3 percent increase in jobs in education and health services over the past 12 months, compared with a 1.9 percent decrease in manufacturing jobs, according to the BLS.
