Update: Former marine dies of complications from cancer

More than $6,100 raised for former Marine battling cancer

UPDATE: Former marine Jose Granado has died.

According to his friend, Wendy Williams, Granado passed away this morning after a more than four-year battle with colorectal cancer. He was 39.

TATUM/RUSK COUNTY (KYTX) - Former marine Jose Granado didn't run in this morning's 5-K race to honor him -- but more than 200 of his neighbors did.

The Hometown Hero March was a benefit for the family of Jose Granado -- who is battling terminal cancer.

People in his hometown of Tatum organized 5K and one-mile runs today to raise money. Organizers said Granado was bedridden today -- and unable to run.

"Although he's not here, his mother is here. His sisters are here... They get to soak in what all Jose missed and I know they will go back to his house," organizer Wendy Williams said.=

Granado's brother was also a marine -- killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2009.

More than 150 people ran today -- and dozens more danced Friday night during a Zumba class.  All told -- organizers raised $6,155 that will be given to the Granado family.
