UPDATE: Kaufman Co. DA, wife found dead

UPDATE: KAUFMAN (KYTX) - Kaufman County Sheriff David Byrnes confirms in a press conference Sunday that District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, were shot to death at their home in Forney.

He says the Sheriff's Department, the FBI, and the Texas Rangers are still investigating an active crime scene.

Sheriff Byrnes said he is not ruling out that others in the county could be targeted. For that reason he has increased security at the courthouse and other areas in the county.

He would not comment on the details of the shooting or the investigation, including whether he has any leads in determining who the suspect or suspects are.


(KTVT CBS NEWS) - Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife were found dead inside their Forney home.

Lt. Justin Lewis with the Kaufman County Sheriff's Dept conformed to 1080 KRLD that both DA McLelland and his wife Cynthia were murdered.

Because of the location of the home, in an unincorporated area of Kaufman County,  the crime falls under the jurisdiction of the sheriff's office.

Sources tell CBS 11 news that the DA was shot multiple times with what is believed to be an assault rifle while Cynthia McLelland was only shot once. Sources also way that there were no signs of forced entry.

Kaufman Police Department Chief Chris Aulbaugh said law enforcement officials will be looking at the latest shooting to see if it is related to the murder of Kaufman County assistant district attorney Mark Hasse.

The FBI in Dallas and Denver have beencomparing the Hasse shooting to that of Tom Clements, executive director of Colorado Prisons Bureau. Clements was shot and killed as he answered the front door of his home on March 19.

Federal and local investigators are now on the scene. The FBI, U.S. Marshals and TX Rangers are increasing security around all Kaufman Co. officials.

The McLellend's have five children, two daughters and three sons. One son is a Dallas Police Officer.



KAUFMAN COUNTY (KYTX) - The Kaufman County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of the Kaufman County District Attorney and his wife.

Lt. Justin Lewis tells KYTX CBS 19 news District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife were found dead in their home. The Sheriff's Office is investigating and only has preliminary information at this time.

In January, Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse was shot and killed in a parking lot close to the Kaufman County Courthouse.
