UPDATE: GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - A man and woman from Bastrop, Louisiana, were arraigned in Gregg County's Justice Court this morning on felony marijuana charges.
According to arrest documents, 26-year-old Kindrex Lydell Richards and 24-year-old Samantha Shunta Johnson were traveling east on Interstate 20 in a blue Chrysler sedan in the left-hand lane without passing other vehicles, which led Gregg County patrol deputy Tracy Freeman to initiate a traffic stop of the sedan.
While talking with the pair, Freeman noticed a small bag of marijuana in the glove box, according to documents. Richards gave the deputy consent to search the vehicle, but he later took off with no shoes on across Interstate 20 and into a wooded area north of the freeway. At about 1:30 p.m. Monday, after a two-hour active search, Richards was seen walking down Marvin A. Smith Road in the direction of FM 1252, where he was taken into custody.
Johnson told Freeman that there were two pounds of marijuana in the vehicle, but deputies later found eight pounds of the drug.
Richards is in jail for possession of between five pounds and 50 pounds of marijuana, and evading arrest, and remains jailed today on $17,500 bond. Johnson is in jail on $15,000 bond, charged with felony marijuana possession.
