Update: Smith County drowning victim identified

UPDATE: A woman who drowned in a private pond near Winona has been identified.

 According to Smith Co. Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 Mitch Shamburger, the victim is 41-year-old Christy Dennis of Tyler.

Dennis was employed at ETMC in Tyler as a monitor tech.

 At approximately 5:20 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, 2014, Smith County Sheriff's Office deputies and detectives responded to a 911 call regarding a woman who had jumped out of a boat into a private pond located in the 13500 block of Highway 155 in the northeastern part of Smith County near Winona.

According to the caller, the woman jumped into the water to swim. After a few moments of swimming, she called for help and went under water.
Deputies arrived on scene within minutes and were joined by game wardens of the Texas Parks and Wildlife, Winona Fire Department, Noonday Fire Department, and the Smith County dive team. At approximately 7:00 p.m. the first responders were able to recover the body and Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 Mitch Shamburger pronounced the victim and ordered an autopsy.


SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - Smith County emergency crews have recovered a 40-year-old woman's body from a private pond around 155 north near interstate 20.

Crews were called out to the scene around 6:30 Sunday afternoon. People on the property told officials the woman was in a paddle boat in the water and somehow fell in. Investigators found out the woman called for help but subsequently drowned.
