GILMER/UPSHUR COUNTY (KYTX) - Upshur County says it might solve its nearly $1 million budget shortfall -- with an auction.
Commissioners spent this morning taking inventory of surplus county equipment kept at the Rock Building in Gilmer. They are considering whether to auction the items -- with revenue from the sales benefiting the county treasury.
Commissioners slashed department budgets last week -- after learning the county had a $930,000 shortfall.
"Basically, in the last few years leading up to the problem, the county spent more money than it brought in. In the 2011 and 12 budget, we began to correct the problem, and with this budget, we've corrected the rest of the problem," commissioner Cole Hefner said.
The commissioners court meets at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 30, to decide whether to sell the surplus items in an auction.
