Upshur County lifts burn ban, but Gilmer city does not

GILMER (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) -- After heavy rains today, Upshur County Judge Dean Fowler announced this afternoon he has lifted the county's outdoor rural burn ban effective immediately. However, a spokeswoman for the City of Gilmer said its ban remains in effect.

Fowler said he lifted the rural restriction after conferring with chiefs of some fire departments in the county.

Noting that the Upshur County Commissioners Court, which recently extended the ban after Fowler imposed it August 9, is not scheduled to meet again until Sept. 30, the judge said lifting the ban could give residents a "very small window" of time to burn trash and debris accumulated over the past few weeks.
