UT Tyler among best universities nationwide for student veterans

TYLER (KYTX) - UT Tyler is named one of the leading four-year public universities in the nation for student veterans. The college got this recognition after a study by the publication The Military Times.

Veteran Chris Cox served in the U.S. Army Infantry from 1992 - 1995.

"I served during Operation Uphold Democracy up in Haiti," Cox says.

As soon as he got back, he went to a junior college, where there was no veterans resource center.

"That was a big inconvenience as far as not knowing what my resources were, what to do, how to use my benefit," he says.

That's why he became UT Tyler's Veteran's Affairs Coordinator this November, helping the 600 student veterans on campus.

"It's huge because you go from being part of a family where you would actually literally take a bullet for one of your friends and then you come back to a college level experience and it's completely different. It's night and day," Cox says.

The camaraderie at the resource center is why student veteran Neal Herrington decided to work there.

"It's just a good opportunity, a way to help other veterans," he says.

The UT Tyler Veteran's Resource Center has been open for about a year now, and provides tons of services. There's the lounge area where student veterans can hang out together, an office where they can get help with any education paperwork, and a study room.

Out of 600 universities nationwide, UT Tyler was ranked the sixth most supportive to student veterans, beating out UT Austin and UT Arlington.

The news is not surprising to Herrington, who sees the center as a symbol of support and belonging.

Cox hopes to continue growing the veteran's resource program to help students with not only paperwork, but housing and other needs.
