Valentine's Day love across the world

TYLER (KYTX) - Valentine's Day would not be complete without a little love and romance. One East Texas woman is celebrating this special day with someone 4,600 miles away.

Heather Robertson just happened to meet her Valentine's Day sweetheart across the world in Scotland. That's where she's from and where much of her family still lives. About a year ago, she planned an eight-week trip to visit them. It was on that vacation she met the love of her life.

"How was your day?"

"Eh, a little busy. A little not busy."

Heather Robertson and Stephen Jones are in a relationship nearly 5,000 miles away from each other. And, Heather says they are 100% committed to making it work.

"We've totally appreciated Skype, Viber, all of those things- Facebook Messenger, everything.

She says technology is how they met in the first place. She was researching upcoming concerts for her trip to Scotland.

"And, in the midst of doing that, I signed up on this website to get notifications and emails. Well, I started getting these random emails in my inbox."

One of those random emails was from 34-year-old Scotsman, Stephen Jones.

"He had mentioned that he, you know, liked some of my interests, liked the music that I picked and would love to chat some time."

Well, they did chat- all the way up until her visit to Scotland, where they finally met in person.

"He scooped me up and gave me the biggest hug and just from moment one, it was just great."
The two spent eight inseparable weeks together touring Europe and getting to know each other.

"This is at St. Andrew's beach. We had a picnic on the beach."

They fell in love. And by the end of the trip, Stephen asked Heather to marry him.

"Waterworks happened and people in the streets of Glasgow start woohooing and looking at us. And, I'm like, 'oh my gosh!'"
One of the happiest days of her life.

"He said, 'Heather, I didn't want you going back to the states as my girlfriend. I wanted you going back as my fiancee.' And, of course, I start crying even harder."

She says she has no doubt, he's the one

"I don't have any fear or question. We've made this work."

Stephen says he feels the same way. His favorite thing about Heather is her outgoing personality.

"She's so outgoing and the opposite to me because I'm not outgoing and I feel that her personality balances my personality out brilliantly. And, she actually helps me be more outgoing." he says.
"This Valentine's Day, Heather says they have a special date planned, on Skype, of course."

"We'll try and get the same meal and the same drink and sit in front of the computer, and just, you know, turn the lights down and put candles, you know, just pretend like we're together!"
She's looking forward to the next Valentine's Day, when they won't have to pretend to be together anymore.

"But, it's what works for right now."

Heather and Stephen get married in Sterling, Scotland April 26. They're honeymooning in the Canary Islands. After that, Stephen will move into Heather's new home in Tyler.

Heather's engagement ring is a family heirloom. It belonged to Stephen's grandmother, and Heather says it fits her like a glove!
