Valentine's Day online scams

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Valentine's Day is full of sweets and treats but it's not so sweet when you find out you've been scammed. The Better Business Bur ea says there are things you need to look out for this Valentine's Day when shopping online.

They say you may even want to consider shopping local, that way you know your loved one's gift is fresh, legit and delivered on time.
Lana Jones is flower shopping for her son's girlfriend.
"I looked for several different flowers online, but I was just scared I figured I better come out and do it in person."
A decision Longview's BBB Office Manager Linda Witherspoon says might not be a bad idea.
It'll ask them to click onto a link and when you click on that link it asks you for your card information.
Scammers, she says taking advantage of the online shopper's desire to get those roses or box of chocolates to their sweetheart and on time.
"We have had people that have been victims of this that have actually sent money."
To play it safe, Witherspoon says some may want to consider shopping local.
Owner of Longview's Edible Art Debbie Fontaine agrees.
"See exactly what kind of product, what quality of product, how it's going to be presented, fill out a gift card in your own name if you'd like & it's delivered to your loved one."
And if there is a problem.
"You have a place to come if something hasn't been followed through correctly, you don't have to worry about a scam."
Witherspoon says when shopping online this Valentines Day, look for these 3 things:
  1. Secure website
  2. Return and refund policies
  3. Contact information
"Oh I can call and get this for $19.95, well they call and pay the $19.95 they pay the service charge...and the company doesn't exist."

The BBB sayS just be wary of those Valentine's Day smooth operators trying to get you to click on a link or submit a payment online. Be careful with all of your transactions and remember the golden rule, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
