Weather forces cancellation of first flight day at U.S. Hot Air Balloon Race

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Overcast skies forced judges and organizers to cancel first flight day tasks for the U.S. Hot Air Balloon National Championship this morning in Gregg County.

Organizer Gai Bennett said winds were calm at the surface but quite fast about 600 feet up at about 6 this morning. Also, a high-level fog had drifted into the area. By 6:30, the winds had slowed, but the fog remained at about 1,500 feet up, Bennett said.

The championships will continue Wednesday morning, with one or two tasks from today's flight day likely to be added to Wednesday's challenges, she said.
