(KYTX) - Twitter branches out with a new way for users to tweet short videos. The new app is called, Vine.
For Twitter users, posting a photo has been the primary way to share an image. Now, Twitter wants users to bring those images to life, unveiling an app that lets users embed their original videos inside a tweet.
Twitter acquired the video-sharing service, Vine, last fall. The premise is short and sweet, just like a tweet. Instead of 140 characters, videos are limited to six seconds or less.
The results, looking at early posts from twitter, are looping videos are similar to gif's, those animated video files used to express various internet memes.
Many in the tech industry have dubbed Vine "Instagram for video," and it's perhaps Twitter's challenge to the popular photo-sharing app, which is owned by Facebook.
Twitter also recently added photo filtering to its apps, so users don't have to go to another service like Instagram. Right now vine is available only for iPhone and iPod touch.
Twitter says other platforms are in the works. It joins a crop of other apps for sharing video like Viddy, Cinemagram and Socialcam.
