HALTOM CITY, TX. (KYTX) – Wendy Davis is running for governor of Texas.
The state senator from Fort Worth made it official Thursday afternoon making the announcement to several thousand supporters from the Haltom City Civic Center.
Davis electrified Democrats in June by slipping on a pair of pink Mizunos and a back brace to stage a dramatic 11-hour filibuster of a Republican bill that drastically scaled back abortion rights in the state.
Davis, an attractive single mom who worked her way up from a trailer park to make it through Harvard Law School, made the official announcement Thursday.
For the Democratic party in Texas, she represents the best shot at capturing the governor's mansion since George W. Bush ousted Ann Richards in 1994.
The gubernatorial candidate must raise money quickly though to compete with Republican Attorney General Gregg Abbott whose campaign has raised nearly $25 million more than Davis' $1 million.
