West fertilizer plant faces many fines after explosion in April

(KYTX) - The West fertilizer plant faces thousand of dollars in fines for April's deadly explosion.

The fines come after the Occupation and Safety Health Administration (OSHA) cited the West fertilizer company with 24 serious safety violations.

They include exposing workers to ammonium nitrate -- the chemical involved in the blast that killed 15 people.  The fines add up to 118,000, 300 dollars.

The California Senator who announced today's violations says the fines should be higher.

"I'm going to talk to my friends at the Department Labor and talk about this."

Records show OSHA had not inspected the West plant since 1985, but Boxer says its nearly impossible since the agency is understaffed.

The owner of the plant declined to comment on the safety violations.
